modern or barbaric?
going through different communities at orkut, i came across one that was about a bunch of women claiming to be reforming the social structure of pakistani women.
having been abroad for some while, i treasured my indentity of being a pakistani woman. today i am proud to call myself a muslim, a muslim alone.
the community had a debate going on as to whether or not pre-marital sex is liberation for women. Glorified be God!
Although ive spent a large part of my life out of pakistan, ive spent the last five years in toronto. ever since i was 16. the forming years of an adult. its amazing how whilst sitting in the so called 'west' i am urging to inculcate modest and pious values in my child, while on the other hand women in pakistan are fighting for sexual 'liberation' for their kids! for the first time in my life, i feel utterly blessed at having spent the last 5 yrs here, as opposed to pakistan! God knows what my mentality would have turned out to be!!!
as the new 'modern' woman era emerges in pakistan, im wondering if these women really knwo what theyre doing. i consider myself a feminist, my entire education is about liberating women and feminism. yet whilst i debate teachers and colleagues day and night about the liberation i recieved through islam - the right to be recognized as a human, the right to vote, the right to inheritance, the right to divorce.. 1400 yrs ago whilst canada started recieving them merely 60-40 yrs ago... im cringing at the thought of how invaluable muslim women consider such.
while these women argue that birth control pills have liberated them, i strongly believe that it has liberated men instead. without having to deal with kids, they are capable of jumping woman to woman. whereas a woman, the emotional bean bag that she is, is left feeling insecure and torn. almost 40% of the women who consent to pre marital sex do so thinking that it would strengthen their relationship. as someone in the forum pointed out, women are relationship oriented while men are goal oriented... heck ya! thse women might thinnk they share something special with this individual... but dont we make mistakes? i wouldnt wanna make this mistake and find out that the man i married is comparing me to his past bed companions!
i think past relationships make a person who they are. the whole process of bonding, nurturing and then emerging stronger after the breakup relaly makes a girl who she is. but for a guy???? not neccesarily so!
im womdering if we're returning back to the barbaric times where sex was the ultimate guage of happiness. sons married mothers, daughters buried alive blah blah! when i think barbaric i think men pounding onto their wives, killing each other, life with no laws.. !
are we living in a so called 'modern' era or circling back to the barbaric times? what are the laws by which we gauge and govern our lives? tv? friends? culture? social status? religion?
