My very mean mother..
This poem i dedicate to my mum.
My very own, very mean mum.
Yes the same mum who sent us to bed at the stroke of 9
while all my friends got to watch late night shows till past midnight
My very mean mum,
the very same mum who believed in the healing power of nature
made us get up at the stroke of dawn for fajr
and go out for a 15 minute walk after,
for she truly believed that a healthy mind needs an early rise
My very mean mum who curfewed us at 10 pm
while all my friends clubbed out
The very same mum who told us no dating till we were 18
while my friends started dating from the very mature age of 13 and 14
My very mean mum who visited my friend's homes
She knew every single one's parents by their first name
and had their numbers memorized by heart!
She even invited them for tea parties every other month!
Can u imagine the sheer embarassment?
My very mean mum,
who watched all our shows with us!
More like censored them!!
friends wasnt allowed till we were 16
and sweet valley high was a no go!
Dare I mention Indian movies?
My very mean mum,
yes the very same who believed in caring
made us sweep mop mow and shovel the mosque
while my friends hung out at the mall
The very same mum who made us
pack our bags the night before
and pack a lunch, chocolates werent allowed
Oatmeal were a must for breakfast
for she truly believed health came first
My very mean mum who made us
get up early on weekends
so we could attend sunday school at the mosque
or simply eat breakfast together as a family on saturdays
While all my friends woke up at the normal time of noon or one
my very mean mum who believed in inner goodness
made us wear clothes that couldnt show our belly
all the while that belly piercings were in fashion
While all my friends flashed G strings and thongs through their low rise jeans,
She called them dental floss!!!
While all my friends spent mega bucks on he latest styles
My pocketmoney was to be divided
Not just on clothes and accessories
but charities and shelters too!
My very very mean mum...
For without her meanness,
Id be roaming the streets of downtown Toronto
Sharing a joint with Alicia under the bridge!
